About BracketScience

Pete Tiernan, Bracket ScientistPeter Tiernan has been writing about the NCAA tournament since 1991. His articles have appeared in several newspapers and magazines including the Basketball Times, Basketball Weekly, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Florida Times-Union, Kansas City Star, New York Times, Raleigh News & Observer, St. Louis Dispatch, and more. Pete has also been a guest on dozens of radio and television programs across the country. Since 2003, he has been writing a special series on tourney forecasting for ESPN.com’s INSIDER website, which draws millions of visitors each year.

Pete’s unique historical slant on March Madness helps readers understand what to look for in evaluating a team’s chances of advancing in the tourney. His knowledge of tournament history is based on an extensive database he has built that contains statistics on every tournament and the 1408 squads that have played since the 64-team format was introduced in 1985.

When he isn’t trying to find the method to March Madness, Pete is a marketing director for a software company. He has been an advertising and marketing executive for 19 years. Before that, he taught Composition and Shakespeare at the University of Michigan, where he earned his Masters degree in English. Throughout his career, Mr. Tiernan has done freelance writing for newspapers and magazines on such diverse topics as mutant mosquitoes, softball junkies, Frisbee golf, rockabilly guitarists and Robert Frost.
